Jonás Cuarón releases ‘Campeón Gabacho’ exploring Mexican migration

Mexican filmmaker Jonás Cuarón has released his new film, ‘Campeón Gabacho’, which explores the complexities of Mexican migration to the United States. Based on the 2015 novel by Aura Xilonen, the story follows Liborio, played by Juan Daniel García Treviño, a young migrant who uses boxing to navigate the challenges of unemployment, language barriers, and social tensions in a hostile environment.

Cuarón stated that his work is driven by a need to ‘generate Latino heroes’ due to the lack of representation in cinema, particularly within the context of the ongoing migration crisis. The film features an international cast including Rosario Dawson, Leslie Grace, Dolores Heredia, Rubén Blades, and Eddie Marsan.

‘Campeón Gabacho’ served as the opening film for the 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM). It previously premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, where it won the Audience Award in the Narrative Spotlight category. Distributed by Cinépolis Distribución, the film is scheduled for a general theatrical release across Mexico on October 29, 2026.
