João Palhinha Leaves Tottenham After Club Declines Purchase Option
Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha confirmed his departure from Tottenham Hotspur after the club chose not to activate the £22 million (approximately €30 million) permanent transfer clause following his loan spell from Bayern Munich. Palhinha posted an emotional farewell on Instagram, thanking fans and staff: “Dear COYS, I am writing this message with heartfelt gratitude for all the kindness and support you have always shown me… Representing Tottenham has had a profound impact on my life, not only professionally but also personally, and it is something I will carry with me forever.”
During the 2025‑26 season Palhinha made 45 appearances, scored seven goals and provided one assist, including a decisive goal against Everton that helped Spurs avoid relegation. With a contract running until 2028, a move back to his native club Sporting CP has been widely reported, while Tottenham has shifted its midfield investment to new signings Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
