João Pessoa Generates 86% of Paraíba’s Formal Jobs in First Half of 2026
Data from Brazil’s General Registry of Employed and Unemployed (Caged) show that João Pessoa was responsible for 86% of all formal jobs created in the state of Paraíba between January and June 2026. The capital added a net total of 5,692 positions, while the state as a whole recorded 6,603 new formal jobs.
In June alone, João Pessoa posted 803 net vacancies, driven by 10,036 admissions and 9,233 dismissals, and accounted for 33.9% of the 2,365 jobs created across Paraíba that month. Formal employment in the city rose from 234,710 links in December 2025 to 240,402 by the end of June, a 2.43% increase, outpacing the national average of 1.96% and the Northeast average of 1.68%.
The city ranked eighth among Brazil’s 27 capitals for formal‑job growth in the first half of 2026 and third among Northeast capitals, behind Salvador (2.79%) and São Luís (2.74%). Over the 12‑month period July 2025‑June 2026, João Pessoa recorded 12,273 net vacancies, a 5.38% rise, placing it third nationwide after Macapá (7.62%) and São Luís (5.91%). Over the past 66 months since January 2021, the capital has created 68,551 formal jobs, a 39.89% increase over its existing stock.
