João Pessoa expands role in Brazil's national cultural governance

Marcus Alves, director of the Fundação Cultural de João Pessoa (Funjope) and president of the National Forum of Secretaries and Managers of Culture of Capitals and Associated Municipalities, was sworn in as a member of the Tripartite Inter‑Managers Commission of the National Culture System (CIT‑SNC). He highlighted the commission as a historic step for Brazil’s cultural policy, emphasizing the need for federal, state and municipal dialogue to strengthen the National Culture System.

The João Pessoa municipality, through Funjope, is also launching a series of cultural events. A municipal Quadrilha Juninas Festival featuring 23 groups began on June 10, followed by a state‑level festival. Additionally, free concerts by Sandra Belê and the group ‘Os Fulano’ were held at the historic Conventinho as part of the São João Multicultural program.

In the political arena, Alves attended the launch of Constitutional Amendment 13/26 on tax reform at the National Congress, advocating for safeguards to preserve municipal and state cultural and sports incentives that could be affected by the reform slated to start in 2027.
