João Pessoa municipal initiatives July‑August 2026
Overview
The João Pessoa municipal government pursued a wide agenda of social, housing, infrastructure, health and cultural programmes through July and early August 2026. In May the council approved a R$ 1.1 million grant for 23 child‑and‑adolescent NGOs and a R$ 430 million payroll schedule for municipal workers. The “Compra Assistida” housing scheme added 30 contracts, bringing total homes to 224, and modular apartments were toured in Complexo Beira Rio on 22 July with a lottery on 31 July. Mayor Leo Bezerra inaugurated 30 newly paved streets (total 1,200) on 28 July and opened a corn‑distribution programme for 60 000 vulnerable families on 15 July. He also signed a land‑donation to the Paraíba State Court (25 May) and joined the federal “Safer City” programme (3 July). June saw a child‑labour “Cartão Vermelho” campaign, a family‑agriculture fair and cultural events through Funjope, including the São João Multicultural festival and the Paraíba Junino quadrilha competition. LGBTQ IA+ services expanded with the “Eu Posso Diversidade” micro‑credit line and health appointments; a free LGBTQ English course was launched. Anti‑racism actions included new programmes, a municipal racial‑equality council and a reporting app. Environmental steps featured a workshop on Brazil’s new licensing law (8 July) and the suspension of the Roger landfill park project (6 July). Education initiatives comprised a modular school slated for August, a rebuilt school equipped with Google Classroom and Maker spaces (16 July), and a record Ideb score of 5.7 for early‑year elementary education announced on 6 August. On 3 August the Estação Cabo Branco opened a free August cultural programme with crafts, chess, yoga and dance. On 28 July the paving works, costing R$ 7.96 million, included cobblestones, drainage, sidewalks and tree planting across ten neighbourhoods, benefitting residents such as a child with cerebral palsy.
