João Pessoa investigates three suspected meningitis cases in children
Health authorities in João Pessoa are investigating three suspected cases of meningitis in children. The patients are currently hospitalized and undergoing examinations to confirm a diagnosis, as they exhibit symptoms compatible with the disease.
As a precautionary measure, family members and classmates of one of the children have undergone chemoprophylaxis to prevent potential transmission. Although the children were undergoing symptoms, the Municipal Health Secretariat reported that none had attended school during that period, and officials stated there was no contact between the affected child and classmates.
In the state of Paraíba, the Ministry of Health has recorded 165 meningitis notifications in 2026. Of these, 38 have been confirmed, 89 discarded, 29 remain under investigation, and nine were closed as inconclusive. A recent death due to suspected meningitis was also reported at the Trauma Hospital in Campina Grande on August 9.
