Meningitis investigation in João Pessoa

Overview

Health authorities in João Pessoa, Brazil, launched an investigation into three suspected cases of meningitis in children. The patients were hospitalized for examination to confirm a diagnosis.

As a precaution, family members and classmates of one child received chemoprophylaxis. The Municipal Health Secretariat noted that the affected children had not attended school while symptomatic, and there was no reported contact between the affected child and classmates.

In the state of Paraíba, the Ministry of Health has recorded 165 meningitis notifications in 2026, with 38 confirmed cases and 29 remaining under investigation. A death due to suspected meningitis was also reported in Campina Grande on August 9.
