João Pessoa joins national workshop on Brazil's new Environmental Licensing Law

The municipality of João Pessoa took part in a technical workshop in Brasília organized by the Brazilian Association of State Environmental Entities (ABEMA). The city was represented by Welison Silveira, João Pessoa's secretary of environment, alongside officials from other states and federal agencies.

The two‑day event examined the implementation of the General Environmental Licensing Law (Law No. 15.190/2025). Participants discussed topics such as positive licensing lists, exemptions, agro‑industrial and sanitation activities, urban planning, financing, the Atlantic Forest, traditional communities, and the new licensing instruments – License by Adhesion and Commitment (LAC), Special Environmental License (LAE), Corrective Operating License (LOC), and data integration among licensing bodies. The goal was to harmonize federal, state and municipal responsibilities, produce common guidelines, and ensure municipalities can autonomously manage local‑impact projects under the new legal framework.
