João Pessoa municipality outlines LGBT support programs on World Day Against LGBTFobia
On 20 May 2026, the João Pessoa City Council held a special session to mark the World Day Against LGBTFobia. Geraldo Filho, coordinator of the city’s Coordenadoria de Promoção à Cidadania LGBT, presented municipal actions for LGBTQIA+ residents, including the “Eu Posso Diversidade” employment‑inclusion program run with the Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Trabalho, and a dedicated office offering psychological counseling and health services.
Cleber Ferreira, president of the Movimento do Espírito Lilás, highlighted ongoing violations of LGBTQIA+ rights and called for stronger representation and an end to violence. The session, proposed by councilor Marcos Henriques on behalf of the Movimento Espírito Lilás, also referenced the 2019 Supreme Court ruling that applies Brazil’s racism law to anti‑LGBT crimes. The Coordenadoria’s office is located at Rua Diogo Velho, 150, and can be contacted via WhatsApp (83) 99394‑3402.
