João Pessoa opens São João Multicultural festival in historic centre

The municipality of João Pessoa, through its cultural foundation Funjope, launched the São João Multicultural 2026 program on Friday night, initiating a series of decentralized June festivals across the city’s neighbourhoods. The opening concert took place at the Conventinho in the historic centre, featuring local forró acts Lily Sanfoneira and the band Os Gonzagas.

Funjope executive director Marcus Alves highlighted the significance of starting the program in a historic venue, while mayor Leo Bezerra was praised for promoting cultural occupation of the centre. Artists emphasized the importance of bringing the celebrations to multiple districts, noting that the free, accessible programming supports independent musicians and broad public participation. Attendees praised the initiative for its inclusive, democratic nature and its role in preserving Northeastern culture.

The event underscores the city’s strategy to decentralise traditional festivity spaces, offering free cultural experiences to residents of all social classes.
