João Pessoa ramps up cleaning for Brazil‑Norway World Cup broadcast
The Municipal Urban Cleaning Authority (Emlur) in João Pessoa will carry out a special cleaning operation for the public viewing of the Brazil vs Norway round‑of‑16 match of the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, 5 January. About 120 agents will be deployed before, during and after the event at the Busto de Tamandaré screen, covering the beach, promenade and surrounding areas. Their duties include picking, sweeping, waste collection, washing of public spaces and even applying aromatic essences. Six additional collection boxes will be installed and plastic bags distributed to spectators so fans can pack their own waste, a practice the city hopes will speed up cleanup and promote environmental awareness.
Emlur expects the event to generate roughly eight extra tonnes of waste, bringing total collection to about 24 tonnes compared with the usual 16 tonnes taken daily along the coastline. Cleaning crews will also maintain the Parque das Três Ruas area and other parts of the city. Superintendant Ricardo Veloso said the operation reinforces the municipality’s commitment to clean public spaces and shared civic responsibility.
The initiative aims to ensure a comfortable, orderly environment for fans while encouraging proper waste disposal.
