State authorities in Paraíba have seized about 65,000 noisy fireworks as part of the “Paraíba with Quiet Fireworks” campaign, enforcing Law 13.235/2024 that bans loud pyrotechnics to protect animals, people with autism, the elderly and other noise‑sensitive groups. The João Pessoa municipal environment office likewise urges residents to use silent fireworks for the June festivities.
The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics warns that the June and July celebrations have caused a surge in severe burn injuries among children. Hospital data for 2024‑2025 show 13,800 pediatric admissions for burns, with more than half of those patients under five years old. Officials stress constant adult supervision and avoidance of any fire‑related devices.
Nutritionists also alert the public to the high sugar and calorie content of traditional São João dishes such as pamonha, canjica and sweetened cakes. Excess consumption can trigger spikes in blood glucose, especially for people with diabetes or other metabolic conditions, and may cause gastrointestinal distress in children. Moderate intake, adequate hydration and balanced meals are recommended.
