João Pessoa’s Municipal Pet Hospital Marks Two Years with Over 173,000 Free Services

The Hospital do Pet, a municipal veterinary centre operated by João Pessoa’s Secretary of Care and Animal Protection, celebrated its second anniversary in July 2024. Since opening, the facility has provided 173,489 free procedures for dogs and cats, including consultations, surgeries, radiography, ultrasonography, laboratory tests and tele‑medicine specialties such as cardiology and oncology.

Official figures show 121,129 procedures were performed in 2025 and another 52,360 attendances were recorded in the first half of 2026. Secretary Welison Silveira said the numbers demonstrate the consolidation of public veterinary care in the city, while executive secretary Daniela Ronconi highlighted the service’s role in improving both animal welfare and public health.

The centre, officially named Hospital Veterinário Zélia Maria Dantas, offers a range of diagnostic and therapeutic services free of charge, aiming to expand access for the city’s pet owners and strengthen municipal animal‑protection policies.
