Rio de Janeiro police investigate homophobic attack on actor João Victor Gonçalves
Rio de Janeiro police have opened an investigation into a reported homophobic attack against actor João Victor Gonçalves. The incident occurred on the night of September 4 near the Rock in Rio festival, where the actor was approached and mocked by a group of individuals during a live stream on the Kick platform.
The streamer involved, identified as GH Rell RJ, initially characterized the encounter as “street entertainment” but later issued an apology. However, the streamer has also accused the actor of racism, claiming the actor's report of fearing a robbery was an insult to his character. The defense for the streamer maintains that the comments were directed at the actor's clothing rather than his sexual orientation.
The case has drawn significant political and social attention. Federal Deputy Erika Hilton announced plans to involve the Public Ministry against both the streamer and the Kick platform, seeking criminal and civil accountability. The actor, known for his role in the soap opera “Quem Ama Cuida,” expressed that the experience was traumatic and emphasized that “homophobia is not entertainment.”
