Jordan Bardella pushes EU overhaul ahead of 2027 French presidential race
Jordan Bardella, the 30‑year‑old leader of France's National Rally, is the party's candidate for the 2027 presidential election after succeeding Marine Le Pen. In interviews he described the European Union as "completely obsolete" and called for a new European architecture that would cut French contributions to the EU budget, labeling the planned 2028‑2034 budget increase a "democratic scandal."
Bardella argues that the EU’s policies on globalization, open markets, immigration and regulation are outdated, and he seeks to restore national sovereignty, borders and stricter immigration controls. He proposes a 50 % reduction in France’s financial share of the EU budget and is building alliances with Italy's Giorgia Meloni and Poland's Law and Justice party to bolster his reform agenda.
