King Abdullah II warns of regional instability at UN General Assembly
During the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, King Abdullah II of Jordan delivered a speech addressing regional instability and national security concerns. The King warned that Israeli military activities and presence in southern Syria pose a direct threat to regional stability and Jordan's own security. He emphasized that any threat to Jordan's northern borders or its water security constitutes a direct threat to national security.
Addressing the Palestinian issue, the King criticized Israeli policies in the West Bank, including land seizures, settlement expansion, and the displacement of Palestinians. He accused the Israeli government of attempting to frame the conflict as a war of religions and urged the international community to support a two-state solution. He reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to the Hashemite Custodianship of holy sites in Jerusalem and continued support for UNRWA.
On the sidelines of the assembly, King Abdullah II held bilateral meetings with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg. Discussions with the Cypriot President focused on strengthening ties between Jordan and the European Union, as well as trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan. The leaders also reviewed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a means to enhance regional connectivity.
