Jordi Martí emerges as frontrunner in Junts per Catalunya Barcelona mayoral primary

Junts per Catalunya is holding internal primaries to select its candidate for the Barcelona mayoral race. Four candidates – Jordi Martí, Pilar Calvo, Jaume Alonso‑Cuevillas and Glòria Freixa – have met the 20 % endorsement threshold and will vote by telematic ballot on 20‑21 June.

Jordi Martí, current president of the party’s municipal group in Barcelona and longtime ally of former mayor Xavier Trias, was the first to secure the required endorsements, positioning him as the favourite. Trias publicly endorsed Martí as his successor, giving the candidate strong institutional backing within the city council. The party faces growing competition from the PSC, the emerging Aliança Catalana and more hard‑line independentist formations, making the primary a pivotal moment for Junts as it seeks to retain its central role in Catalan politics.
