Feijóo proposes nationality reforms and stricter border controls

Spanish political leaders Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Pedro Sánchez have engaged in a series of high-profile events in Catalonia, signaling the start of pre-election campaigning for 2027.

Feijóo, leader of the Partido Popular (PP), has proposed a significant reform to Spanish nationality laws. His plan includes reviewing how citizenship is granted, maintained, and revoked, specifically advocating for the ability to strip nationality from foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes such as murder, sexual assault, or belonging to criminal gangs. He also emphasized a stricter immigration policy, promising a “locked down” Spain for those attempting to enter irregularly, while advocating for orderly migration for those seeking work.

In response, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the PP and Vox, accusing them of disloyalty and political opportunism regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta. Sánchez also addressed legal challenges involving the Democratic Memory Law, specifically the Supreme Court's suspension of certain voter census registrations.

Meanwhile, Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat, reaffirmed his support for Sánchez and noted that the central government would support Catalonia through economic financing and debt forgiveness proposals. The political tension is further underscored by the ongoing humanitarian situation in Ceuta, which remains a central point of contention between the governing PSOE and the opposition PP.
