Jorge Araya García seeks reelection as Costa Rican Constitutional Chamber magistrate

Jorge Araya García, a magistrate of Costa Rica’s Constitutional Chamber (Sala IV), has formally submitted a request to the Legislative Assembly for reelection. His current term, which began on November 1, 2018, is set to expire on October 31.

If approved, Araya García would serve an additional eight-year term. Under the Political Constitution, magistrates are considered reelected for an equal period unless at least two-thirds of the 57 deputies in the Legislative Assembly vote otherwise, requiring 38 votes to block the reelection.

In his announcement, Araya García stated his decision is driven by a desire to defend national institutions. He characterized Costa Rica as facing its most severe political, economic, and social crisis since the Civil War of 1948, noting that the country has shifted from being admired globally to being viewed with concern. He expressed a commitment to contributing to the peace and general welfare of the nation through the defense of the rule of law.
