Overview
In late September 2026, high-ranking judicial figures in Costa Rica announced intentions to seek reelection amid heightened political tension.
Attorney General Carlo Díaz Sánchez declared his intent to seek a four-year term for 2026–2030. While Díaz maintains a high performance rating, his administration has faced scrutiny from President Laura Fernández’s government. To secure reelection, he must obtain support from at least 12 of the 22 Supreme Court of Justice magistrates.
Simultaneously, Jorge Araya García, a magistrate of the Constitutional Chamber (Sala IV), formally requested reelection from the Legislative Assembly. If approved, Araya García would serve an additional eight-year term. He framed his candidacy as a necessity to defend national institutions, stating that Costa Rica is facing its most severe crisis since the 1948 Civil War and has shifted from being “admired globally to being viewed with concern.”
