Jorge Palma dies at 76, leaving a major legacy in Portuguese music
Jorge Palma, one of Portugal’s most influential singer-songwriters and pianists, died on Monday night at the age of 76 due to cardiorespiratory arrest. His passing has triggered widespread mourning across the country, with tributes arriving from political leaders, fellow musicians, and the public.
President António José Seguro described Palma as an exceptional creator and a reference in Portuguese music for over 50 years. Other figures, including Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and PS Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro, praised his unique voice and artistic freedom. Musicians such as Sérgio Godinho and Rui Veloso shared personal reflections, with Veloso noting that Palma had recently refused aggressive medical treatment to preserve his voice for performing.
Palma’s career spanned more than five decades, beginning with classical piano before transitioning to pop-rock. He was known for iconic songs such as ‘Frágil’, ‘Bairro do Amor’, and ‘Deixa-me Rir’. His public wake was held at Voz do Operário in Lisbon, attended by numerous artists and public figures, before his cremation.
His family, including his wife Rita Tomé and children Vicente and Francisco, requested that he be remembered through his songs and words.
