Death and tributes to Portuguese musician Jorge Palma
Overview
Portuguese singer-songwriter and pianist Jorge Palma died on Monday night at age 76 due to cardiorespiratory arrest. His death prompted widespread tributes from political leaders and fellow musicians, who recognized his five-decade career and influence on the nation’s music scene.
A public wake was held on September 23 at the Voz do Operário in Lisbon, attended by prominent artists such as Sérgio Godinho, Paulo Gonzo, Carminho, and Camané, as well as political figures including former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Minister of Culture Margarida Balseiro Lopes. During the event, Godinho remarked that while Palma’s music will continue to exist, the community must support those left behind. Following the wake, a funeral procession departed for the Alto de São João cemetery for a private cremation ceremony reserved for close family and friends.
In a subsequent tribute, the Portuguese Parliament unanimously approved a vote of condolence proposed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco. The motion noted that Palma’s legacy “will continue to inspire several generations.” During the session, deputies observed a minute of silence and a round of applause to honor the Lisbon-born musician. The official text highlighted his musical journey, his mentorship under Ary dos Santos, and his personal history, including his 1973 exile to Denmark to avoid mandatory military service before returning to Portugal in 1974.
