Jorge “Locomotora” Castro dies at 59 after medical emergency
Argentine boxing legend Jorge “Locomotora” Castro has died at the age of 59. The former WBA middleweight world champion suffered a sudden medical emergency while at a bingo establishment in Morón, Buenos Aires.
Initial reports and medical information suggest the collapse may be linked to his struggle with diabetes and insulin levels, though official investigations by the Morón UFI No. 8 are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death. His daughter, Quimey, described the event as a sudden heart attack that occurred within a fifteen-minute window.
Castro is celebrated for one of the most prolific careers in Argentine boxing, recording 130 victories in 144 professional bouts. He is most famously remembered for his 1994 victory over John David Jackson in Monterrey, Mexico, where he achieved a dramatic ninth-round knockout to defend his WBA title. This moment, which he dubbed “La mano de Dios,” remains a landmark in the sport.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Castro was widely recognized for his social commitment, particularly his work supporting community kitchens and soup kitchens in the Greater Buenos Aires area during and after the pandemic.
