Death of former boxer Jorge Castro

Overview

Former Argentine world boxing champion Jorge ‘Roña’ Castro had been planning an eight-episode biographical series to document his life and career, including his 1994 WBA middleweight title win. The project was expected to film in locations such as Argentina and Mexico. Castro died at the age of 59 following a sudden medical emergency at a bingo hall in Morón, Buenos Aires province. While the exact cause of death remains under investigation by Morón judicial authorities, specifically Morón UFI No. 8, preliminary reports suggest the collapse may be linked to his struggles with diabetes and insulin treatment. During the emergency, Castro reportedly experienced sharp chest pains and collapsed; despite receiving immediate assistance and CPR, he could not be revived. His daughter, Quimey, noted that he had experienced chest pains shortly before losing consciousness, though she emphasized there was no medical negligence. Recent reports from his family suggest the death was a natural heart attack. Beyond his professional boxing record of 144 bouts, including 130 victories, Castro was widely respected for his social commitment. In recent years, he dedicated significant time to community work, managing soup kitchens and food distribution networks to assist vulnerable populations in the Greater Buenos Aires area. Following his passing, his partner, Noelia Vigliarolo, shared on social media that the couple had planned to become engaged during a trip to the coast over Mother's Day weekend. The pair had maintained a public relationship and collaborated on professional projects, such as the streaming program ‘El show de Roña y Noe’, which launched in June 2026. Vigliarolo described their bond as one of “constant companionship despite their differences.”
