Jorge Ávalos Mariño seeks Subcontraloría after exclusion from Comptroller shortlist
Opposition deputy Jorge Ávalos Mariño has been excluded from the shortlist to become the Comptroller General of the Republic in Paraguay. The final shortlist includes the current comptroller, Camilo Benítez Aldana, along with Mabel Bogado Oviedo and Carlos Vera Ruiz.
Ávalos Mariño explained that his exclusion was tied to a prior decision by his party's board, which mandated that the shortlist consist exclusively of opposition representatives. He stated that if a candidate from the Colorado Party had been included, opposition candidates were expected to resign, a commitment he intended to honor.
Following his exclusion, Ávalos Mariño proposed a political exchange to ensure the opposition retains influence within the oversight body. He suggested supporting Camilo Benítez Aldana for the position of Comptroller General in exchange for the government's support to keep the current sub-comptroller, Augusto Paiva, in office.
