Jorhat police arrest five in honey-trapping and extortion racket
Assam Police have dismantled a honey-trapping and extortion racket in the Jorhat district, resulting in the arrest of five individuals. The group, which includes two women and three men, is accused of targeting affluent individuals through social media platforms like Instagram.
The investigation began after a bank manager from Tinsukia filed a complaint. According to police, the victim developed a relationship with a woman from Jorhat online. In August, the victim was lured to a rented accommodation in Jorhat, where two men allegedly recorded intimate moments. The gang then used the footage to blackmail the victim, successfully extorting a total of Rs 3 lakh through multiple demands.
Authorities identified Moromi Das Neog as the alleged mastermind. Following the arrest of two men, Sanjib Das and Ankit Paul, police tracked and apprehended Das Neog in Dibrugarh. Other arrests include Baby Bora and Ankit Bora. Police seized mobile phones containing multiple QR codes linked to digital money transfers, suggesting a wider network of victims, potentially including businessmen and government employees.
