Honey-trapping and extortion racket in Assam

Overview

Assam Police dismantled a honey-trapping and extortion racket in the Jorhat district, leading to the arrest of five individuals, including two women and three men.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint from a bank manager in Tinsukia. Authorities allege the group targeted affluent individuals via social media platforms such as Instagram. In one instance, a victim was lured to rented accommodation in Jorhat where two men allegedly recorded intimate moments to facilitate blackmail. The gang reportedly extorted Rs 3 lakh from the victim through multiple demands.

Police identified Moromi Das Neog as the alleged mastermind. Following the arrests of Sanjib Das and Ankit Paul, investigators tracked and apprehended Das Neog in Dibrugarh. Other individuals taken into custody include Baby Bora and Ankit Bora. During the operation, police seized mobile phones containing QR codes linked to digital money transfers, suggesting the network may have targeted other businessmen and government employees.
