Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the extradition and transfer of former Interior Minister José Serrano from the United States to the El Encuentro maximum security prison in Santa Elena. Serrano had been in U.S. custody since August 2025 following a visa violation. Although a U.S. immigration judge rejected his asylum request in May 2026, he had previously received protection under the Convention against Torture (CAT), which delayed his deportation. During his transfer, Serrano's family raised concerns, alleging he was removed from a detention center without notice and was left incommunicado.

Following the announcement, President Noboa issued a direct political challenge to Rafael Correa, stating, “Ya mismo te toca a ti” (It is your turn very soon), referring to Correa's own pending legal sentences.
