Josef Deimer, long-time Lord Mayor of Landshut, has died

Josef Deimer, the long-serving Lord Mayor of Landshut, has passed away. Deimer held the office from 1970 to 2004, having entered the role at age 33 as the youngest Lord Mayor in Germany at the time.

Throughout his 35-year tenure, Deimer was a prominent figure in Bavarian municipal politics, serving as the long-term chairman of the Bavarian Association of Cities (Bayerischer Städtetag). He also held positions in the Bavarian State Parliament and the Bavarian Senate.

Deimer is noted for his connection to the town of Waldkirchen, which was elevated to city status in 1972 during his mayoralty. As part of that transition, Landshut established a partnership with Waldkirchen and gifted the town its golden official chain.
