Deimer held the office for 35 years, from 1970 to 2004. Having been elected at age 33, he was noted as Germany’s youngest mayor at the time. His political career extended beyond Landshut; he served as a member of the Bavarian Landtag from 1966 to 1970, a member of the Bavarian Senate between 1982 and 1999, and acted as the long-term chairman of the Bavarian Association of Cities.
