Joseph Kabila launches FRN politico-military alliance in Goma

Former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila has announced the creation of the Front pour la refondation de la nation (FRN), a new politico-military coalition. Launched from his residence in Goma—a city currently under M23 control—the FRN officially succeeds and absorbs the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and the M23 rebel group.

The movement aims to end the administration of President Félix Tshisekedi, stating it will use “all means, including force” to achieve its goals. The FRN leadership includes Corneille Nangaa, a former AFC leader, and M23 spokesman Bertrand Bisimwa as vice presidents. The coalition has claimed it will inherit all rights and obligations of the dissolved AFC, including commitments made during the Doha negotiation process in Qatar.

The announcement has triggered intense political backlash in Kinshasa. Vice-Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba accused Kabila of attempting to use war to regain power, while Senator Taupin Kabongo labeled him an “impostor and an outlaw.” Within Kabila’s former political family, the PPRD, several cadres have reportedly distanced themselves from the new movement, rejecting the shift toward armed struggle.
