British father fined in Cyprus after son's fatal hotel fall

A Paphos District Court has fined British national Joshua Foster 3,000 euros after he pleaded guilty to causing the death of his young son through a reckless or negligent act. The tragedy occurred on July 12, 2026, at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas, Cyprus, during the family’s first day of vacation.

According to court testimony, Foster lifted his son to a fourth-floor windowsill to show him the hotel’s waterpark, believing a protective glass pane was in place. However, a section of the window was open, and the child fell approximately 12 meters to his death. Despite efforts at Paphos General Hospital, the child could not be resuscitated.

Judge Froso Christodoulidou ruled that a prison sentence was not warranted, citing Foster’s lack of criminal record, his cooperation with authorities, his visible remorse, and the fact that the incident was a “momentary mistake” rather than a deliberate act of endangerment. The judge noted that the window lacked markings to indicate it was open. Foster, an auditor, was permitted to return to the UK to be with his remaining family.
