Journalism groups denounce impunity in journalist murders in Mexico and Peru

On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, advocacy groups in Mexico and Peru have issued calls for justice regarding the killings of media professionals.

In Mexico, the organization ARTICLE 19 held a memorial to honor six journalists murdered in 2026. The group reported that it has documented 181 journalist killings in the country since 2000, attributing the violence to complicity between authorities and criminal groups. ARTICLE 19 warned that the dismantling of democracy in Central America and the Caribbean has also fostered impunity for crimes against the press.

In Peru, the National Association of Journalists (ANP) denounced negligence and delays in investigations into journalist murders. The ANP highlighted specific cases from 2025, including the murder of Raúl Celis, where authorities reportedly pursued a sentimental motive rather than professional or political ones. The association also noted significant delays in investigations for Fernando Núñez and Mitzar Castillejos, both killed in December 2025, noting that essential proceedings only began ten months later.
