Arshad Sharif killing investigation and accountability

Overview

Four years after the 2022 killing of investigative journalist Arshad Sharif near Nairobi, Kenya, international and Pakistani journalism organizations are renewing demands for the prosecution of the Kenyan police officers involved.

While Kenyan courts previously ruled that the shooting violated Sharif’s constitutional right to life and awarded his family compensation, no individuals have been arrested or prosecuted. Although a Pakistani fact-finding team concluded the killing appeared to be a planned assassination, Kenyan authorities have maintained that the incident was a case of mistaken identity. In July 2026, Kenya’s Supreme Court dismissed an appeal to compel prosecution, stating that such decisions remain under the authority of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
