Journalist Roxana Guzmán Kidnapped in Veracruz, Mexico

On the morning of 2 June 2024, armed, hooded men forced entry into the home of journalist Roxana Guzmán Ramírez, director of the news portal Pulso Informativo del Sureste, in the municipality of Nanchital, Veracruz. A video of the break‑in was circulated on social media, showing the assailants using a hammer to breach the door before abducting her.

The Veracruz State Attorney General opened an investigation and deployed a multidisciplinary security team, including police and military forces, to locate the journalist. Authorities confirmed that Guzmán is not listed in the National Detention Registry and have not yet reported her whereabouts. The incident underscores the long‑standing dangers faced by reporters in Veracruz, a state identified by NGOs as one of the most hostile regions for press freedom in Mexico, with numerous killings and disappearances of journalists over the past two decades.
