Roxana Guzmán murder sparks arrests of police and cartel members in Veracruz

Journalist Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez was abducted from her home in Nanchital, Veracruz on 2 June 2026 by armed men who broke the door and forced entry. Her remains were identified on 3 July 2026 in a ranch located between the municipalities of Ixhuatlán del Sureste and Moloacán.

State prosecutors confirmed that eight people were detained in connection with the crime: four municipal police officers from Ixhuatlán del Sureste and four alleged members of a criminal cell linked to the Grupo Sombra organization, an offshoot of the Gulf Cartel. The investigation is being coordinated by the Veracruz State Attorney’s Office and the federal Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE).

Press‑freedom groups, including Reporters Without Borders and Article 19, condemned the killing and called for a transparent, exhaustive inquiry. Governor Rocío Nahle faced criticism for her earlier remarks about the victim. The case raises the total number of journalists killed in Veracruz to 34 this year, highlighting ongoing threats to media workers in the state.
