Belgrade rally supports Zoran Kesić after show cancellation amid journalist threats
A large-scale rally was held in Belgrade to support Zoran Kesić and the team behind the satirical program '24 Minutes,' which was recently canceled by the new owners of Nova S television. While the network's parent company, Adria News Network (ANN), cited high production costs and marginal commercial impact as the reasons for the cancellation, Kesić and various journalists' associations argued the decision was politically motivated, occurring just two months before elections.
Simultaneously, media watchdog SafeJournalists and other organizations have reported a surge in online threats against journalists in both Serbia and Montenegro. Many of these threats followed media coverage and commentary regarding the funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić. Targeted individuals include Predrag Popović, Safeta Biševac, Marko Novičić, and Zoran Kesić, with some receiving threats of physical violence, sexual violence, or arson. Organizations such as ANEM have called for urgent investigations by prosecutors to address these security threats and the growing climate of intimidation against media professionals.
