Journalists in Kinshasa receive training in physical and digital security

Journaliste en Danger (JED), supported by Reporters Without Borders, conducted a two-day training session in Kinshasa for approximately thirty journalists. The program focused on physical, digital, and psychosocial security, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence in journalism.

Participants received instruction on threat mapping, risk assessment, data and source protection, and cyberbullying prevention. The training also included war-displaced journalists living in Kinshasa. Lead facilitator Donat Mbaya Tshimanga emphasized that no report justifies risking one's life and advised journalists to withdraw from situations where physical safety is threatened.

The second day addressed the use of artificial intelligence, presenting it as a tool for assistance and protection rather than a replacement for professional judgment. Upon completion, participants received certificates qualifying them as trainers, tasked with cascading this safety knowledge to other media professionals to foster a stronger culture of security within newsrooms.
