Jovem Senador 2026 program concludes with approved legislative proposals

The 2026 Jovem Senador program concluded with 27 students from Brazil's 26 states and the Federal District completing a week of legislative experience. The participants approved three proposals intended to be forwarded to the Senate's Human Rights Commission (CDH) as legislative suggestions.

Key approved measures include a national policy to support immigrant and refugee students, aimed at addressing linguistic and cultural barriers and combating xenophobia. This proposal, named the 'Lei Juan Guevara' in honor of Venezuelan immigrant student Juan Jose Ramirez Guevara, includes provisions for foreign language courses for teachers and adapted teaching materials. Other approved proposals focus on expanding opportunities for youth and preventing violence against women and girls.

Among the participants was Maycon Monteiro da Silva, a 17-year-old student from Rondônia. Monteiro, who won the state stage of the program with an essay on democracy in social media, visited the office of Senator Confúcio Moura in Brasília to discuss the importance of youth engagement in the legislative process.
