J. R. Smith arrested in Texas on family violence charges
Former NBA player and two-time champion J. R. Smith was arrested in Texas on charges of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence. The 41-year-old was taken into custody following a traffic stop on Interstate 30 near Royse City, after an automated license plate reader alerted officers to an active warrant issued out of Southlake.
Smith was transported to the Hunt County Detention Center, where he remained in custody without a set bond. Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the alleged incident, the identity of any victims, or the nature of the injuries. The Southlake Police Department confirmed an ongoing investigation into the matter.
Smith, who played 16 seasons in the NBA and won championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, recently graduated from North Carolina A&T State University. This arrest follows a previous legal issue in 2009 related to a 2007 vehicle accident.
