Roger Schmidt appointed Red Bull Global Head of Soccer
Red Bull announced that Roger Schmidt will take over as the company’s Global Head of Soccer, the role formerly held by Jürgen Klopp. Schmidt’s appointment is effective 1 October 2026. Klopp left Red Bull to become the coach of the German national team.
Schmidt, 59, will oversee Red Bull’s worldwide football portfolio, which includes seven clubs – RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Bragantino, Omiya Ardija – and minority stakes in Leeds United and Paris FC. He will share leadership of the Global Soccer team with Florian Scholz, head of Global Soccer Commercial.
Red Bull sport director Oliver Mintzlaff praised Schmidt as the right person for the role, citing his experience developing young talent and his high‑pressing style that fits the Red Bull football philosophy. Schmidt previously coached Red Bull Salzburg (2012‑2014), led Benfica to the Portuguese league title in 2023, and most recently served as a global football advisor for Japan’s J‑League.
