Klopp appointment nears, Red Bull talks continue

Overview

The German Football Association (DFB) met Jürgen Klopp in New York on 11 July 2026 and reached an agreement in principle on a four‑year contract worth roughly €7 million per year, extending to the 2030 World Cup. The terms would keep Klopp as a Red Bull brand ambassador while he succeeds Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s early exit at the 2026 World Cup.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice‑president Hans‑Joachim Watzke confirmed that the key points are aligned, but final approval still requires Red Bull’s management, the DFB supervisory board and shareholders. Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull’s global‑soccer chief, is expected to decide on releasing Klopp from his current role as Global Head of Soccer, a contract that runs until 2029.

Regional DFB associations, led by Schleswig‑Holstein president Uwe Döring and former president Theo Zwanziger, warned the dual role could compromise independence and increase costs, citing possible bias toward Red Bull‑owned clubs such as RB Leipzig.

On 11 July the DFB announced a scheduled meeting with Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff to negotiate Klopp’s early release from his Red Bull contract. The association described the exchange as constructive, saying essential contract points had been agreed and that talks will continue in the coming week.

The DFB remains optimistic that a definitive deal can be signed within the coming week, positioning Klopp to lead Germany through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup while Red Bull prepares its own succession plan.
