Jürgen Klopp appointed Germany national team coach until 2030
The German Football Association (DFB) announced that Jürgen Klopp has been hired as head coach of the Germany men’s national team, signing a contract that runs to the 2030 World Cup. He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup. Klopp’s first match will be a Nations League fixture against the Netherlands on 24 September 2026.
Klopp brought a four‑man coaching team – assistants Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and Sven Bender – and noted that Per Mertesacker will become DFB executive director on 1 January 2027. In his introductory press conference he warned that any media intrusion into his family life would prompt an immediate resignation, emphasizing that his focus is on football performance. He also spoke of football’s ability to unite the country, saying “the national team can change a nation.” The appointment is viewed as a major step toward reviving Germany’s international football fortunes ahead of Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
