Jürgen Klopp faces criticism over Bayern Munich tactical comments
Germany national team manager Jürgen Klopp has drawn criticism from football figures following his comments regarding Bayern Munich’s tactical setup during their Champions League draw against Arsenal. During a halftime interview, Klopp stated he did not fully understand Vincent Kompany’s defensive system, noting that the team’s approach appeared to shift between hybrid, man-marking, and zonal defending.
Former Bayern Munich executive Oliver Kahn criticized the remarks, questioning whether Klopp was acting as a national coach or a football analyst, and emphasized the importance of collegiality among managers. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder also weighed in, suggesting that the national coach and Germany’s largest club should maintain a positive relationship.
In addition to tactical critiques, Klopp addressed the role of Harry Kane, expressing confusion over his positioning during pressing phases. Separately, Klopp defended Joshua Kimmich against discussions regarding his sporting future, calling such debates “absolutely impious” given the midfielder’s recent personal bereavement following the death of his father.
