Jürgen Klopp near appointment as Germany coach amid DFB talks

After Germany’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup, head coach Julian Nagelsmann resigned. The German Football Association (DFB) has since focused on former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp as his successor. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and league chief Hans‑Joachim Watzke travelled to New York to meet Klopp and his adviser Marc Kosicke to finalise a contract. Negotiations centre on a salary reported at €7‑8 million per year and the handling of Klopp’s existing Red Bull employment; the DFB will not pay a transfer fee and hopes to keep him as a brand ambassador for the energy‑drink group.

Klopp has said a deal needs "time" while he resolves matters with Red Bull and clarifies his role. He praised Nagelsmann publicly, calling him a "top trainer". Among the squad, only defender Antonio Rüdiger posted a public thank‑you to Nagelsmann, while the rest remained silent on social media. A fan poll showed 92.8 % of respondents want Klopp to prioritise youth development, and former player Bastian Schweinsteiger criticised the DFB’s apparent singular focus on Klopp.

Overall, the DFB aims to stabilise the national team quickly, with hopes of improved performance in the Nations League and the next World Cup, while managing sponsor contracts and internal power structures.
