JSMM calls for UN referendum and outlines vision for independent Sindhudesh
Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) Chairman Shafi Burfat has proposed a vision for an independent Sindhudesh, calling for a democratic, secular welfare state. Burfat’s plan emphasizes the management of Sindh’s natural resources, maritime trade, and energy by its residents. He outlined a social safety net that includes free basic quotas of water, electricity, and gas for Karachi residents, alongside state-provided education, healthcare, and housing.
JSMM leadership, including Vice Chairman Sajjad Shar and Secretary-General Shahnawaz Bhutto, has appealed to the international community for a United Nations-supervised referendum to determine the region's independence. The group alleges that the Sindhi identity and territorial integrity are under threat from Pakistan due to resource exploitation and political suppression.
Burfat specifically accused the Pakistani state of engaging in “demographic genocide” through the settlement of outsiders in urban and industrial centers to reduce the Sindhi population to a minority. He further claimed that the military has occupied millions of acres of land in the region to weaken Sindhi political mobilization.
