JSMM movement for Sindhudesh independence
Overview
Shafi Burfat, chairman of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), has initiated a political movement focused on the future of Sindh. Initially, Burfat proposed a Sindh National Unity Convention to bring together political parties, intellectuals, and various community representatives. This proposal sought to establish a ‘Sann Declaration’ and a ‘National Charter for Sindh’s Unity, Survival and Equal Citizenship’ to address issues regarding water, land, coastline, and natural resources.
The movement has since expanded to include a formal vision for an independent, democratic, and secular welfare state known as Sindhudesh. JSMM leadership has appealed to the international community for a United Nations-supervised referendum to determine the region's independence.
Burfat has leveled serious accusations against the Pakistani state, alleging “demographic genocide” through the settlement of outsiders to reduce the Sindhi population. He further claims the military has occupied millions of acres of land to hinder political mobilization and that the region's resources and maritime trade are being exploited.
