JSW faces union expansion and property sales as losses top 6 bn zł
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), the largest European producer of coking coal, posted a consolidated net loss of 6.25 billion zlotys for 2025 and an EBITDA loss of nearly 5 billion zlotys. In the first quarter of the current year the loss narrowed to about 616 million zlotys, but the company still owes roughly 1 billion zlotys to the Social Insurance Institution and over 600 million zlotys to suppliers, creating material supply constraints.
At the Knurów mine a new independent trade union, the Free Trade Union “August 80” led by Mateusz Demczuk, was founded, raising the total number of union organisations within JSW to 136 and pushing the unionisation rate to a record 123.6 %. Unions warn that chronic staffing shortages are threatening mine operations.
To improve liquidity, JSW is auctioning non‑core assets, notably the Różany Gaj hotel in Gdynia. Two tender rounds in 2026 attracted no bidders even after the starting price was cut to 25 million zlotys. Additional land parcels in Jastrzębie‑Zdrój (starting at 417 thousand zlotys) and a 47‑hectare site near Mszana (starting at 43 million zlotys) are scheduled for public auctions in July.
