Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa needs €2 bn loan to stay solvent

Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), the only European producer of coking coal, is facing a severe liquidity crisis. The company recorded a net loss of 615.9 million złoty in the first quarter of 2026 and has exhausted basic measures such as accelerated receivables and trade‑credit usage.

JSW says it requires roughly 2 billion złoty of external financing by the end of the year to avoid a loss of liquidity. It is currently negotiating an 850 million zł loan from the Agency for Development of Industry (ARP), which would provide only temporary relief. Existing financing includes pre‑payment agreements worth about 500 million zł and a near‑1.4 billion zł credit line.

The firm has also launched a restructuring programme, including a cost‑reduction deal with unions expected to save 1.2 billion zł and postponed social‑security contributions for thousands of employees. With basic tools depleted, JSW is seeking additional capital, looking at investors beyond the European market to secure the needed funding.
