JSW workers protest demanding clarity on mine restructuring
Members of the Sierpień 80 trade union held a picket at the headquarters of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) in Jastrzębie-Zdrój on August 25. The protesters submitted a petition demanding specific details regarding the company's restructuring goals, future employment levels, and production volumes. Workers expressed particular concern regarding the potential liquidation or transformation of the Knurów-Szczygłowice mine.
In response, JSW management highlighted a financing agreement with the Industrial Development Agency (Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu) providing up to 824 million PLN in installments. The company also noted that state-funded protective benefits have been activated under mining laws, with 1,123 employees utilizing mining leave since July. Additionally, an agreement signed in February to suspend certain employee benefits is estimated to save the company approximately 1.2 billion PLN between 2026 and 2027.
